Roughly 20 miles north of San Diego along the Southern California coastline lies the village of Del Mar, a tiny beachside community with a vibrant surf culture and quaint small-town vibes. And there’s no place that encapsulates the laid-back luxury of this destination more than L’Auberge Del Mar, a coastal resort that feels more like a dreamy vacation home than a standard hotel.
The resort sits on a piece of land long considered a cornerstone of the Del Mar community. The property was home to the Stafford Inn, a popular destination for Hollywood celebrities in the early to mid-1900s. A-listers such as Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, and Jimmy Durante frequented the hotel to escape the hustle and bustle of Tinseltown.
While the property experienced many changes over the years, the most significant transformation happened in 1985, when a local resident bought the land, opening the doors of L’Auberge Del Mar in 1989. Since then, the property has undergone two major renovations, most recently in 2021 under the direction of BigTime Design.
Today, the resort is infused with California cool at every turn, encompassing 5.2 acres of lush grounds atop a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Guests can easily walk to the beach via a private path or hitch a ride from the resort’s golf cart valet service.
The rooms all have beachy decor and a private balcony to enjoy partial views of the ocean, resort pool, or bustling village streets. The warm neutral tones are offset by bright white crown molding. And the plush bedding with crisp white accents make a nice backdrop for the pops of ocean blues in the artwork. This bright and airy design exudes coastal serenity.
The lobby is far more luxurious than a living room, but it somehow manages to feel like one. Its comfy couches, live music, and Living Room Bar invite guests to relax and hang out for a while.
Next to the lobby is Adelaide, the property’s signature restaurant. Situated on an elevated deck above the pool with dramatic sunset views, it features menus that are “both ocean-forward and rooted in the earth.” And thanks to a strong relationship with local fishermen and farmers, Adelaide uses fresh and responsibly sourced ingredients in their dishes.
One of the property’s most impressive amenities is the spa, which features 10 treatment rooms, herbal-infused steam rooms, and an indoor-outdoor relaxation area with a fire pit, lush greenery, and various refreshments.
Another highlight is the pool — the on-site restaurant is only steps away and guests can soak up views of the Pacific Ocean while taking a swim. There are also cabanas (available for a fee) that include comfy sofas, a TV, refrigerator, and most importantly, complimentary chips and guac.
Voted as one of the best hotels in California in Travel + Leisure’s 2022 World’s Best Awards, L’Auberge Del Mar is the perfect choice for travelers seeking a quintessential Golden State getaway with a view. Learn more about booking your stay here.
